T-Fusion's Chef Daniel Rivera Comes Second in the Chef Wanted TV Competition

On October 17, Food Network aired the Chef Wanted episode featuring Chef

Daniel Rivera from T-Fusion Steakhouse. Four chefs were called to show off their cooking skills in a competition, where the winner was to be offered a job at Christy's on Broadway, a popular non-kosher restaurant in Long Beach, LA.
Daniel Rivera reached the final round with flying colors, where he was competing head-to-head with a local Californian chef.
Apparently, LA couldn't handle the New York toughness, and our chef got a distinguished second place. Lucky for all NYC kosher diners, T-Fusion Steakhouse gets to keep its accomplished chef for the patrons to enjoy his excellent cooking.Daniel Rivera on Chef Wanted

Rafaello Kosher Pizza Opening in Midtown Manhattan

After we reported a few weeks ago that "Pizza al Volo" was due to open sometime soon, here comes another pizza cafe on its heels. "Raffaello" will be located near 46th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenue and will open at the end of October. The owner Charly Darwich tells us that it will be more upscale then your typical kosher pizza store, and will specialize in real Italian pizza, not American style, but the prices will fall in line within the other pizza places. The restaurant will also serve pasta, sandwiches, and salads, all under the OK kosher supervision (Cholov Yisroel).

Solo Turns Chinese

Solo Restaurant

After a few months of serving Italian dairy cuisine, Solo NYC, located on 55th and Madison, is now turning into an upscale Chinese Restaurant.

Truth is, we did not see this coming so fast (although an upscale dairy restaurant in midtown was a risk) but now, being that this will be the only upscale Chinese restaurant in all of Manhattan, this is real promising. Meanwhile, we just got an email from the restaurant which reads likes this:

"We are excited to announce that our Prime family of restaurants will now feature a totally new concept for us. Starting Sunday, September 29th, Solo Restaurant will become Solo Chinese Kitchen and begin serving strictly Kosher, authentic Chinese meat cuisine in the same beautiful setting as before."

The menu, conceived by Chef Lin, will feature the finest quality renditions of delicious Chinese food favorites, expertly prepared and presented, as well as reasonably priced. Whether for a business lunch or a family dinner, if you like Chinese food, you are going to love Solo Chinese Kitchen.

Solo Chinese Kitchen will continue to offer a wide range of private dining options including our best selling chefs table overlooking the kitchen. Starting next week, Solo Chinese Kitchen will be open on Saturday nights throughout the fall and winter months.

We will, of course, continue to serve you our best selling Pizza next door at Pizza Da Solo and Chef Guillermo will now relocate our dairy kitchen over to the Lincoln Square Synagogue catering hall - we invite you to come and see it for your next event."

Restaurant Openings and Kosher in the News

The midtown Manhattan pizza war just got hotter. With pizza shops already in the neighborhood including
Bravo Pizza, Lorelli's Pizza, Jerusalem Cafe, Milk n Honey, Circa and Tiberias, the famous but non-kosher Luzzo's in the East Village is opening their first kosher location in a few months at 261 Madison Avenue
(between 38th and 39th Street, near Grand Central Terminal), called "Pizza Al Volo." It's a partnership between Michele Iuliano, owner of the Luzzo's Group and real-estate moguls Alex Sapir, Rotem Rosen and Paolo Zampolli.  "I'm from Italy and never had in America a pizza like back home until I tried Luzzo's, but I could never enjoy it with my partners who eat only kosher."Luzzo tried to create a kosher version and I fell in love with it and decided to turn it into a big business" Zampolli said, They hope to eventually expand Pizza Al Volo into a chain.

Madonna goes to Prime Bentley for Succos

The NY Post also reported on Thursday that The Material Girl and her 3 kids dined in the succah of The Prime Restaurant at the Bentley Hotel. A spy said "the star's SUV pulled onto the sidewalk at the East Side restaurant, close to a side door so she could sneak in, with her head completely wrapped in the scarf (see photo), which also covered her eyes. They left the SUV on the sidewalk, blocking pedestrians to wait for her return two hours later." She was seen praying and dancing up a storm.

Lox New York City
This is one of these cafes that are literally and figuratively hidden and out of sight from many diners. It's in the lower level of The Jewish Museum and it's largely an unknown. But it happens to be a great spot for an inexpensive, quick, counter-service kind of lunch, especially if you find yourself on the East Side of Central Park.  They are located on 92nd Street off 5th Avenue. Under the supervision of Rabbi Aaron D. Mehlman. Click here for pictures and their menu.

We hear that the opening is scheduled for October 2nd.
Located at 40 Broad Street, on the 2nd level, off Broadway, Reserve Cut will be under the supervision of the OU.

Cafe de Paris
While this is a not a new restaurant, in fact, it's been around for 17 years, the Boro Park dairy restaurant has recently undergone a major transformation. But now it is a definite choice for if you're looking for a nice waiter-service dairy restaurant in the area . Click here for photos of the renovation.
The Hester is moving out of the Dining Room
The Hester's Itta Werdiger Roth To Open Permanent Restaurant Location In Prospect Heights
The Hester
If you're one of the many, many people trying to get into The Hester's underground supper club events before they're sold out, you're in luck, Itta Werdiger Roth (alias Kate Hester) and a partner are gearing up to open Prospect Heights' first kosher small plates bar.

"The Hester will basically cease to exist as it was," Itta says, "but we'll definitely do pop-up events in the restaurant every so often and keep it alive." Itta says she thought of any number of awful names for the place, mostly centered around pickles and brine. "I will definitely be pickling stuff," she says. "The REAL way, fermenting style."

Itta says they're hoping to open at the end of October or early November, so you can finally have your chance to sample her amazing-looking food-albeit outside of The Hester's home of Ditmas Park. (H/T Ditmas Park Corner)
Brasserie HaLevi, a French American kosher restaurant on Central Avenue, is to open in the next couple of weeks, in the corner space once held by Off the Grill. You can see their menu here with some of the highlights being: Oyster Steak Beef Jerky, Bouillabaisse Dinner with Crispy Skin Bronzino and Braised Lamb Shank. They will be under the Va'ad of the 5 Towns. (Photo courtesy of YeahThatKosher)
Noodles Asian Kosher Restaurant
The final piece of the puzzle of the Ruthie's/Sabra takeover has taken shape. Noodles Asian Restaurant opened last month on Central Avenue where Ruthie's once stood for many years. They are next door to Pizza'le, which we told you a couple of months ago, took over Sabra Pizza (both are owned by Sammy, who also owns Burgers across the street).  But what makes "Noodles" different from most Asian cuisine kosher restaurants, according to Dani Klein ofYeahThatsKosher, "is the in-house hand-made pasta or noodles that go into every dish. When ordering from Noodles, you can choose from a variety of noodles: plain, spinach, carrot, knife-cut plain, and knife-cut whole wheat. The process is amazing to watch, as the kitchen is open to customers to watch the noodles being twisted and cut. Before choosing the pasta, you choose what type of protein you want in your dish: Chicken, Beef, Lamb, and Duck. Finally, you choose the style of your dish: Pho (soup), Stir Fry, Crunchy (deep fried noodles), and Sandwich (baguette or laffa). You can watch a video on how they make the pasta here"Noodles" also has a full sushi menu, including a 'meat' sushi menu. They are under the Vaad of the 5 Towns. (Photo courtesy of YeahThatsKosher)
Fanous Bar & Grill
This is the new name of the Persian & Middle Eastern restaurant at 451 Middle Neck Road, which replaces Safa, which replaced Betty's and we hope that it fares better then the two other namesakes. They tell us it's under new management, new design, better food, and better service. For one thing, their website is more professional and has lots of really nice food and catering pictures. The restaurant has live music on Saturday nights, outdoor seating on their front patio and a huge parking lot. They are under the Vaad Harabonim of Queens.
Estreia Restaurant
This upscale restaurant opened a couple of months ago at 978 River Avenue but just caught our eye as they offer a Nouvelle cuisine menu with inspired flavors in a refined ambiance. Opened for dinner only from 5:30-10pm.

South Side Sandwich Shop
South Side Sandwich ShopSouth Side Sandwich Shop
Here is another place that we just discovered. This small  "pop up" outdoorsy restaurant, reminiscent of Ari White's Wandering Que, is also located at 1000 River Avenue  (a block from Estreia above) and serves all the Southern comfort food you'd expect.  With their most recent purchase of a new large smoker (see image above), doubled the size they used to have, we're pretty sure we will be there sooner rather than later.
Rock n' Roll Sushi & Noodle Bar
This sushi and Japanese noodle restaurant opened at 1448 Queen Anne Road (next to EJ's) 3 weeks ago. From the looks of their photos, the sushi looks delicious. Click here for their menu.
Bebe's Kosher Deli
Located within the new MetraMarket development in the West Loop, you will soon find Bebe's Kosher Deli at Chicago French Market at 131 N. Clinton. The deli will be replacing Bebbe's Eatery and the counter service restaurant will provide kosher food for commuters and local professionals looking to grab a quick breakfast, lunch or dinner.
A coming together of the popular North shore suburban kosher restaurants, The Sandwich Club, Emma's Bagel Café and Srulie's Essen Delicatessen, Bebe's Kosher Deli will offer favorites from each restaurant including the firecracker chicken wrap, eggel bagel deluxe and the popular schnitzel pastrami sandwich. Under the supervision of the Chicago Rabbinical Council, all dairy products are Cholov Yisroel while baked goods are Pareve and Yoshon and meat is Glatt Kosher. Fridays at Bebe's will be unique as they include family sized grab and go kosher meals and a variety of challahs perfect for the Shabbos table or a weekend dinner party or brunch. Bebe's Deli also offers choices for groups large and small from their convenient location.  The eatery is just steps from the city's central business district and Randolph Street Restaurant Row and just blocks from the River North / West & Fulton River District neighborhoods, Greek Town & Theatre District.
Hours: Mon-Thu 7:30am - 7pm, Fri 7:30am - 2pm. Phone: 312.207.0572
After 2 months, Voka Restaurant in Orlando is temporarily closed for renovation as they look to open a meat and dairy restaurant in the next couple of the months on the premises of the WorldGate Hotel & Resort.

Kosher Gourmet Restaurant & Bakery at the Hawaiian Marketplace

After many years of wishful thoughts that a kosher restaurant may open in the Venetian or Bellagio or being asked by diners when will there be a kosher restaurant on the Las Vegas strip, this may be the jackpot you were looking for.  Kosher Gourmet Restaurant & Bakery has recently opened and is located in the Hawaiian Marketplace, an outdoor shopping mall, across from the Manadarin Oriental. Hopefully, the odds are in their favor to last longer than some of the other area restaurants who have come and gone. They bill themselves as having an authentic Mediterranean cuisine with healthy vegetarian dishes, including falafel, hummus, kabobs, fresh baked bread and pastries.  Click here to see their full menu. They provide take-out and delivery to all hotels and conventions. They are under the Kosher supervgision of the Va'ad HaKashrus of
Las Vegas and Chabad of Nevada and Rabbi Wasser of Congregation Sharie Tefila LV. (H/T: YeahThatsKosher)

LOS ANGELES, CA:26 Restaurant
26 Restaurant turns meat.
The former dairy restaurant, which was founded by Natalie Sultan, has now been taken over by chef Todd Aarons, who had previously helmed the kitchen at Tierra Sur, a kosher eatery in Oxnard's Herzog Wine Cellars. The modern decor restaurant at 8657 West Pico Blvd. is now open after the completion of construction. They
offer a local rustic Mediterranean menu.
Trattoria Natalie
Natalie Sultan who had opened 26 restaurant (see above) in 2006 with her husband and two daughters, has now moved on to open Trattoria Natalie, which is a half block down Pico in the former King Fu location, serving kosher dairy Italian cuisine. Natalie assembled a unique culinary team to put together a menu of simple but elegant ingredients to create menu items like Homemade Cheese & Mushroom Ravioli, Mushroom Risotto, Panko Crusted Chilean Sea Bass or one of their many Handmade Pizza's baked in their house wood-fire grill. They are located at 8681 W. Pico Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90035. To contact them, email: Info@trattorianatalie.com
