MANHATTAN Pizza Da Solo
As many of you saw on our Facebook page last week, we took a visit to the new Neapolitan-style kosher pizza store in the Sony Building and the lines were long but the pizza was tasty.  A short 7-8 minute wait was well worth it for this authentic, thin and crispy pizza.  The calzone was also a huge favorite of ours.  Click here for their pizza and saladmenu and click here for photos of the store and pizza.

The J Soho (formely Jezebel) The J Soho
It seems that this story has taken a life of its own since Jezebel changed their hashagacha and name.  It was picked up by all the Jewish media outlets as well as the mainstream, including The Daily News
The story seemed to focus on the debate of whether the OU "forced" or "ordered" (as the Daily News headline put it) the name change. Then I saw there were discussions on whether a supervision should have the right to tell a restaurant what to name themselves.  I will let the latter subject be something people can talk about it.
But I just want to set the record straight on the "forced" part. I was speaking to the owners well before they changed hashgachas and they were already committed to changing their name. The fact that they asked the OU to become their supervision, shows that they were ready to do that. So it wasn't like the OU "forced" them to change the name, it was something the owners were deciding to do as well.  In fact,
I just spoke to Rabbi Elefant from the OU and he is very happy with the way things are going and has a very good relationship with the owners.  So enough drama and let's eat some food! As we first reported last week on Facebook - and you guys really need to "like" our Facebook page :) - the restaurant has a new website and Facebook page to show off their new name. Check it out!

BROOKLYNChagall Bistro
NEW: Chagall Bistro
We got a call yesterday from
the owners of this new French restaurant in Park Slope
and so we had to go see it. Sonia and Dan Halimi, are the owners of this classic bistro that could be mistaken for a restaurant in Paris, with wood wall panels and stained glass mirrors and of course Chagall paintings which set the decor. The Halimis arrived in the U.S. last year from Paris and opened up this restaurant, which was non-kosher.  But it was only 2 weeks ago that they decided that they would like to actually eat the food they serve and turned it into a kosher restaurant under the OK Supervision.  The success of nearby Pardes, probably also helped convince them that a terrific restaurant can open anywhere and that people will come. Meanwhile, they are now open for dinner and will be open for lunch next week.  Click here for theirmenu and photos of the restaurant.
They are located on the Corner of 5th Street and 5th Avenue in the trendy Park Slope section of Brooklyn. Their phone number is 718-832-9777 and you can click here for their Facebook page.

FIVE TOWNS
After a couple of months of renovation, Masago Chinese & Japanese Restaurant will be opening after Pesach in the former location of Sapore on Broadway. Details to follow.

Sabra closing
After 41 years serving the 5 Towns Jewish community on Central Ave (and thousands of HAFTR students), Sabra Pizza will be closing its doors this Monday, Feb 18th. Not long after Ruthie's, next door, closed and became incorporated into the Sabra restaurant, the largest of the area's kosher pizza shops will be gone. Remaining on Central Ave are
other longstanding kosher pizza shops: David's Famous, Jerusalem and Shula's. (courtesy of YeahThatKosher.com)

Monday, February 4, 2013 - Chelsea Piers, NY

Whoever had the pleasure of being at the 2013 KFWE last week was probably amazed at the sheer number of wines and dishes they were able to taste.  Think of it as a wedding on steroids!  And with over 30 restaurants and caterers on display, there were over 150 food items to try, each one better than the other.  What really stood out was the creativity in some of the dishes and decor, especially with Heavenly Events which had Ahi Tuna on an edible spoon and ceviche served in a cone shape.  Congratulations has to go out to Gary Landsman and his team at Royal Wine Corp. for putting together another fabulous event. See you next year.

Meanwhile, here are some of my favorites of the night:
Abigael's- Award wining chili slowly smoked for 18 hours
Basil- Chilled cantaloupe soup
Gemstone Catering- Herzog Oak Barrel Smoked Veal Belly
Glatt ala Carte- Tropical BBQ Chicken
Got Cholent?- Texas Smokehouse Cholent
Gotham Burger- Fried Trio
Hakadosh BBQ- 15 Hour Apple & Hickory Wood Smoked Beef Brisket
Heavenly Events & Catering- Sesame Crusted Seared Ahi Tuna in an edible spoon with daikon radish and soy ginger
Le Marais- Grilled Hanger Steak
Pomegranate- Selection of corned beef, lamb breast, pastrami
Prime Grill- BBQ Short Ribs & Porcini Kobe Sliders
Wolf & Lamb- Slow Braised Veal with Turnip puree, crispy fried shallots, porcini sauce

Day 5 logo
BROOKLYN
Day 5
Specializing in authentic Japanese sushi and seafood, Day 5 (get it, fish was created on the 5th day) is taking over the location which formerly housed Sushi Moto.  The Coney Island store between M and N, will feature chefs from NY-famed restaurants Nobu and Blue Ribbon Sushi and will be opening in a couple of weeks. Under Kehillah Kashrus.

King Bites
Just two doors down another restaurant is about to open
at 1720 Coney Island Avenue, in time for Super Sunday.
King Bites (former location of Schnitzel King) promises to bring a newest concept of food flexiblity.  At King Bites,
every customer can choose from 9 types of bites (King Shnitzel, Crispy Shnitzel, Shnitzel Marinara, grilled baby chicken, lamb burger, bbq steak, beef burger, grilled pastrami and vegetable burger) where the customer can "mix or match" their sandwich. Instead of ordering one large schnitzel sandwich, the customer can divide the sandwich to be one schnitzel, one lamb burger and one pastrami.  With the concept of "Mix & Match" the customer has the choice to eat whatever they like without having to order three large portions. They will  also have a full menu, where customers can order sandwiches, wraps, salads, soups, dinner plates and more. Under Kehillas Kashrus.

LONG BRANCH, NJ:
They will be temporarily closed this week. The building is undergoing major renovations after an unfortunate flooding from a broken sprinkler pipe. They are working swiftly and efficiently in order to reopen their doors for you and plan on reopening this Sunday February 3rd. For further information please call 908-616-0731

Burger.org's location on South Street has closed, but their Chestnut address is still open and they will soon be opening another location in the Main Line
