Openings, Closings, and News January 2022

Episode #14 of "It's Ok We're Jewish" Eliezer Jones and Solly Hess is the Kosher Restaurant episode and features and interview with yours truly. Click here for more information and links to the full episode. Click here for just the interview. I think it's a fun listen, let me know what you think.
So on the heels of the anti-Israel smear campaign from Yalla (which we'll talk about under the New Jersey section), the Upper West Side cafe was hit with three very negative reviews on January 10th, from what looks targeted. I will not say it's a shmear campaign because there's nothing funny about this. Click here for our post, with more information and screenshots of the offending reviews. We ask that you if you've been there, please review them. Honest reviews as always, but this is scary what people can do and how just a few reviews can lower a restaurant's score by many points. After I posted about this on Facebook, hundreds of five star reviews have been left by real customers for Modern Bread and Bagel. That is amazing and in combination with the Yalla story, it shows others that when you go after one of our own, we have their back. To see our thank you post, click here. As you know, I'm always pushing for people to give a shout out, let people know of your favorite restaurants. On Facebook, Google and yes, even Yelp. Let's not wait for something like this to happen to help. Modern Bread and Bagel is located at 472 Columbus Ave, New York, NY 10024. Their phone number is (646) 775-2985. Click here for their website.

On January 1st, 2022, the National Kosher Supervision removed kosher certification from multiple 16 Handles locations, as well as Baya Bar and Baked Cravings. As of January 6th, however, Rabbi Aaron D. Mehlman of the National Kosher Supervision fully recertified the 1569 2nd Avenue and 325 Amsterdam (75th Street) locations of 16 Handles. Not word yet on the locations at 1161 1st Avenue (64th Street) or 2600 Broadway (98th Street), but the news about the first two is promising. For more information, or to weigh in, click here.

An owner in the restaurant industry asked me if I thought people would be interested in a Pesach Program located in Manhattan. It could be great for travelers, tourists, locals who are working and can't get away but don't want to make Pesach at home or others who just don't want to travel and want to be wined and dined. It would be in a Manhattan hotel with gourmet meals, shul, shiurim, activities, day camp, whole nine yards. What do you think? Pretty cool, no? Click here to weigh in.

Reservations are hard to get and restaurants are at capacity. They literally can't fit more people in their restaurant and the system isn't taking more reservations when they are fully booked. Which is why when someone books a reservation and doesn't show up, or cancels an hour before or shows up an hour late (for whatever reason), it makes it very difficult for the restaurant. For this reason, Asiatiko in Aventura, FL, The newest, hottest restaurant in all of Florida has been charging a $25 REFUNDABLE deposit for all reservations up to 2 weeks before your reservation. You get charged when you book it and AFTER you dine at the restaurant, it gets credited back. Because of Yeshiva Week, where the stress is multiplied, they charge a $45 REFUNDABLE deposit. If you show up, you get it back. If you don't show up or don't cancel within 12 hours of the reservation, you don't get it back. It is clearly written when you make the reservation. If you don't want to do that, don't make a reservation. Tons of people who would gladly go in your place. Also, many fake credit cards are given so it can't be charged day of or after the reservation. Need a long time period before canceling to try and fill reservations and move things around. Not fair to ask them to do it 2 hours before your reservation and it's very busy. And I'm sure if you show proof that your flight is canceled they will refund you. They are not looking to screw people. They just don't want to be screwed themselves. For more on this, and to weigh in, click here.
