Isaac Bernstein, the brainchild behind Epic Bites, a renowned catering company based out of the Bay area-known for their over the top cuisine and creative menus, is closing up shop and moving to New York. Bernstein, a Bay area transplant originally from New York, who we've known since he worked under the tutelage of Mike Gershkovich in the famed Mike's Bistro restuarant, has been doing consulting for the popular Brooklyn supermarket Pomegranate and has accepted a full time postion in their culinary department.
Click here to see a video of him and Pomegranate catering a five course sheva brachos- we guarantee the video will make you both laugh and drool (spoiler alert: 16 hour braised short ribs!).
Epic Bites, which opened in 2011 has become a huge success in the Bay area serving not only kosher customers but those looking for quality, sustainable, tasty food. One of Bernstein's largest claims to fame has become his tasting menus- sometimes running as much as 24 courses. He regularly wowed diners with his 10 courses of raw fish, followed by numerous molecular tricks, like cardamom flavored dirt and olive oil powder. He also regularly made bacon from veal and ham from duck. And then course after course of mouth watering desserts would emerge from the kitchen to finish the meal with a bang. When Epic Bites posted pictures on their popular Facebook page, we, like many others, couldn't help dreaming about hopping on a plane (and possibly land in time for course number 17.)
Despite his catering success Berstein has always had loftier goals. Berstein has dreams of opening his own restaurant in the future. “I never wanted to do this forever, I never wanted to be a caterer. The restaurant I envisioned would never have worked here."
While Epic Bites will close, Epic Bites dairy events will continue in the capable hands of Bernstein's sous chef Heshy Fried, who will be working in conjunction with L’Chaim Sushi.
The Bay area may be mourning its loss, but Brooklyn is looking forward to becoming a lot more 'Epic'.
