January 2018: Month in Review

MONTH IN REVIEW: OPENINGS, CLOSINGS & NEWS...

MANHATTAN
Manhattan is getting a new business casual dairy restaurant, called Abaita. It is being led by Chef Sruli Subar, well known for his catering and culinary prowess, and his business partner Egidio (David) Donagrandi, who will be the Executive Chef. The restaurant will be located at 145 East 49th St
Abiata (between Lexington and Third) and will have roughly 44 seats. Abaita is kinda slang for "home" in Hebrew as well in Italian (David is from Northern Italy). Construction is almost done and we will update you as they get closer with a soft opening date.

Amba Fidi is No Longer Kosher Supervised

BASTA Exterior
Elan went in for a preview of the Mediterranean Fusion fine-dining restaurant opening soon in Midtown with a mix of Algerian, Tunisian, Israeli and Italian flavors. Down the block from the Beren Campus on E 34th Street; Basta will feature communal seating, Kurdish music, Arak, open kitchen, handmade pasta, fire oven pizza, 3-day fermentation dough, 5-hour homemade sauces and more. Click here  and here to check out the videos.

Replacing the Indian restaurant Tulsi at 211 East 46th St between Third and Lexington avenues will be a new Kosher restaurant from chef Joshua Kessler of Union Square Hospitality and Mike's Bistro. There's no name for the restaurant as of yet but what is known so far is that it will be designed by Roy Nachum, who designed 1 Oak, Southern Hospitality and Hunt & Fish Club. To read about it click here.

Editorial:
Midtown East has all of a sudden become a hot bed of new upscale kosher restaurants after years of quiet since the days of Haikara Grill and Il Patrizio. This resurgence goes back a year to Bedford on Park, months later the UN Plaza Grill opened, and now there is the impending opening of Basta on 34th and Park (see below) and the new meat restaurant reported by the NY Post (see below) being opened by Joshua Kessler at 211 East 46th (off 3rd Avenue). Although Mike's Bistro is still the veteran in the area. But should be a fun time for all.

P.S. Don't forget Wall Street Grill is still looking to open after years of construction and dealing with the city. You still want to open up a restaurant? Oh and there is also NOGA opening on the Lower East Side and Cafe 11 opening up on 50th and Broadway in the next few months. My 2018 predictions already coming true. Big year for Manhattan restaurants.
