Restaurant Openings & Updates (3/14/16)

Seed + Mill, the new Tahini based shop in Chelsea Market received their kosher certification on March 1st. The store sells a variety of artisanal halvas, freshly milled tahini imported from Israel and goat's milk soft serve ice cream topped with, what else? Halva. They also have an interesting breakfast sandwich called the "Chalva" which is basically pressed halva in between two slices of buttered challah. The owners of Seed + Mill want to educate consumers about the goodness of tahini, which those of us who have been to Israel already know all too well. Seed + Mill is under the United Kosher Supervision. The store is in Chelsea Market which is located at 75 9th Avenue in NYC. h/t GrubStreet.com
When one pizza store closes, another opens. At least that's what happened at 419 Kingston Avenue in Crown Heights. Pomodori Pizza has been replaced by the beloved standby, Benny's Brick Oven Pizza. Benny's is more than just a pizza store. They also have an extensive menu with pastas, soups, salads, paninis and more including a new Mexican menu with a twist. The full menu is expected to be released over the next few weeks. As of now you can stop by for a selection of tasty pies and some pasta options with vodka and alfredo sauce.
Brought to you by the Prime Hospitality Group, the Prime Chef Club Room has replaced Prime Pizza on Avenue J. The Club Room will be serving dinner twice weekly on Thursdays and Sundays with exclusive tasting menus prepared by different chefs every week. This past week featured a dazzling menu prepared by Prime Grill's Executive Chef David Kolotkin. Seating is limited and reservations are required for all seatings. For more information and to RSVP, call 212-692-5265 or email info@primechefclub.com
You won't need to look too far, Kold Kuts re-opened last Sunday in a new location just across the street from their previous one. The entire place has been renovated and they are fully prepared for all your take out needs including those for Holidays and Shabbos. Kold Kuts is now located at 3006 Avenue K in Brooklyn.
The opening of Osher Ad, a popular discount Israeli supermarket chain, in New York will be the first of it's kind. The supermarket is set to take over a 70,000 square foot space, formerly home to Pathmark, when they open in Borough Park. The move is set to take in $100 million in sales a year through their target market, the 45,000 households of ultra-Orthodox Jews in the area. Osher Ad is Israel's 4th largest supermarket chain according to their sales data. Stay tuned for an opening date.
Stay tuned for the opening of Prime Wok Chinese Takeout and Catering in Crown Heights. This new Chinese spot comes from the owners of Prime Sandwich, which also happens to be right next door! Rumor has is that there may even be a connecting door between the two restaurants. Prime Wok is located on Kingston Avenue between Crown and Caroll.
Rubin's Kosher Restaurant and Delicatessen, the Boston standby and historical landmark since the 1930's is not closing. We posted on our Foodies Page and in the last newsletter that the owners are looking for an investor to carry on the tradition and bring the business to the next level. In fact, Erica and Allen Gellerman, the long time owners, are still running the place and booking parties for after the summer and they look forward to being part of the restaurant for a long time. Situated in the heart of Brookline, Rubin's has a strong following from locals, universities and tourists from all over the world. If you are interested in hearing more about the investment, please contact Daniel Danesh at daniel@thedaneshgroup.com or call (617) 842-8889
Publisher Elan Kornblum spent a day recently in New York City and Brooklyn with restaurant owner Elias Michael Barnatan from Argentina. Barnatan, the owner of 3 sushi restaurants there called Pi-Chi-Klin, was doing some detailed research on the New York dining scene before he moves to Chicago. Once he moves, he will be opening an Argentinean steakhouse on Lincoln Avenue near Peterson Park. Expected opening date is scheduled for this summer. The menu will be concise and straightforward, specializing in Argentinian cuisine. The restaurant will be waiter service with about 60 seats at first with room to expand to over 100.
March 9th marked the grand opening of the new Italian restaurant in Toronto called Ba-Li Italiano. Ba-Li Italiano is, as you may have already guessed, brought to you by the owners of the popular Ba-Li Laffa restaurants. The new Italian restaurant is serving up fresh pastas, homemade soups, salads, wood oven pizzas, a large variety of fish and panini sandwiches. The restaurant is certified by the COR and is Yoshon and Cholov Yisroel. Located at 1045 Steeles Avenue West.
