Restaurant Openings & Updates (8/3/16)

RESTAURANT OPENINGS & UPDATES:

MANHATTAN
Located at 160 Pearl Street, off Wall Street, Amba FiDi is now open for business. Their specialties are Israeli staples like falafel and schwarma. They are open for lunch and dinner, eat in Knock Off Watches, take out or delivery. Click here to see the menu which consists of classics like homemade hummus, a creamy babaganoush and a signature twist to the falafel, spiced up with jalapeno peppers. Open from 11:30am-9pm with shorter hours on Friday, Amba is sure to be your newest lunch spot. Under supervision of Rabbi David Navarro of Staten Island.

After 3 decades in operation, Great American Health Bar will now be a Shomer Shabbat restaurant and starting next week will be under the OK Supervision. That's right, it's 99% official, as the OK is scheduled to kasher the kitchen this coming Saturday night, and hopefully the following day they will be under the OK. GAHB is owned by the same people who own Cafe Classico up the stairs, which has always been closed on Shabbos and under the OK. While the dairy, health-oriented restaurant downstairs has been a fixture in Midtown for years, frequented by celebrities and business customers, there has always been a hesitation by many to not eat there based on their previous supervisions. We are have been talking to the owners for over a year about this, so we're happy to have been a part of it. Hopefully this will be a game changer and the right decision for them business wise. GAHB is located at 35 W 57th Street.

After much anticipation and speculation, the Manhattan Mexikosher branch location has finally been revealed. Although we had known for months, a sharp eye caught sight of the sign blowing in the wind a week ago. That sign, located at 100 West 83rd Street and Columbus in the Upper West Side is now the new home of Chef Katsuji Tanabe's Mexican Kosher casual restaurant. The restaurant is now officially open with regular hours of 11am-11pm, Sunday to Thursday and there are already lines out the door. Click here to view photos of the food. There is currently one other Mexikosher branch in Los Angeles on West Pico Boulevard. This year we will also see the opening of Baranda, Tanabe's more upscale, forward dining restaurant.

The Service Station is the newest dairy restaurant brought to you by the Prime Hospitality Group. The restaurant has been transformed from an old gas station into a fully updated space including an outdoor patio, full bar and wood-burning pizza oven. Service Station, located next door to the Bentley hotel is serving up a full menu of Italian cuisine including handmade pizza (gluten-free available), pasta, soup, fish, appetizers and more. They are open for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and happy hour with seasonal seating for up to 200 people. Click here to read our full blog post on Service Station Kosher. Located at 500 East 62nd Street in NYC.

BROOKLYN
A new Glatt Kosher Asian inspired restaurant is opening in the former Dolce Vita Creperie location. According to their sign, they will be serving Sushi, Salad and Pasta. The restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner. They will also offer catering. Stay tuned to the Foodies Facebook Group for more details and opening date. h/t Irena Leibowitz

The hottest, newest restaurant in Borough Park has just opened their doors for business. Urbana is a trendy spot with a totally updated menu, not typical of kosher dairy cafes. Think Wild Mushroom Polenta with freshly shaved Parmesan and Basil Oil or a Whole Roasted Bronizi filled with Mushroom and Leek Confit, Yukon Gold Mashed Potato, Red Grapes, and Pistachio. And, you can't forget about the brick oven pizzas and inventive appetizers. The restaurant has a rustic but modern vibe to it, with exposed brick walls, DIY-style lighting and a fabulous ambiance. Click here to see the full menu, make a reservation or just peruse the stunning photos of the new Urbana. Located at 1305 53rd Street off of 13th Ave in Borough Park, Brooklyn.

This week Pescada has opened their second location along with a large party room on Ocean Avenue right off of Avenue M. The decor is quite similar to their original location with sophisticated, sleek white tables and chairs, grey walls and blue accents. The menu will be the same to the original location as well. The extensive menu has plenty of salads, appetizers, fish, pastas, desserts and a full espresso and smoothie menu. The party room in the back will be able to fit 70-80 people. Click here to view a live video of the new restaurant. Pescada Avenue M is located at 1776 Ocean Ave off Avenue M.

CATSKILLS
A new authentic Chinese restaurant is opening in Woodridge, NY hopefully after Tisha B'Av. Click here to view a live video of the inside of the new restaurant. They are still in construction phase but hope to be open for the last few weeks of Summer. This summer will mark their soft opening stage and next summer they will be in full swing serving up authentic Chinese dishes as well as some fan favorites. Chai 18 is brought to you by the Gordon-Cagan family, who also own "Pottery & Glass Land" with 3 locations in the Catskills, Midwood and Five Towns.

You may already know about Mountain Top Steakhouse in the Chalet Hotel from last summer. Well, this year the owner of Mountain Top has decided to open a diary restaurant, calling it Chalet Cafe during the day and keeping it open as a steakhouse at night. Since the restaurant is located in a hotel, the dishes are prepared in completely separate kitchens. The Cafe opened for business on Thursday and during the Nine Days will be open for lunch as well as dinner. Dishes like the Cubed Mozzarella Sticks and Middle East Panini come highly recommended. The menu boasts a full line of pastas, salads, appetizers and desserts as well. Chalet Cafe is open from 11:30am-3:30pm (last seating) and Mountain Top Steakhouse opens up after 5pm until about 10pm. They are located at 50 Chester Road on the Chalet Hotel grounds.

GKR Publisher Elan Kornblum plans on throwing a special "GKRF on the Road" Pre-Opening Tasting at the restaurant, so if you live in Chicago, stay tuned to the Facebook Foodies Group for details. The restaurant will be located at 6112 North Lincoln Avenue.

From the people who brought you 'The Gourmet Carrot', comes 'The Carrot'. The owner of new place broke the news on our Facebook Foodies Group. Opening within the next few months or so, the people of Surfside can look forward to getting a healthy breakfast or a quick, satisfying lunch. The Carrot will have a variety of salads, sandwiches, wraps, juices, smoothies, acai bowls and more. Although, contrary to other healthy restaurants in the area, 'The Carrot' will have a meat based menu as opposed to a dairy one. Being that there are mostly upscale meat or casual grill restaurants in the area, residents and visitors are looking forward to this alternative. Look out for more updates and opening date by following Great Kosher Restaurants on all of our social media platforms.
