HOUSE OF DOG: DOGS N BEER OPENS ANOTHER LOCATION IN BOCA RATON, FL

We have learned that "House of Dog: Dogs n Beer" is opening another location for this popular all-American spot, where they take the kosher hot dog experience to a whole new level with over a dozen varieties of sausages, and over 50 hard to find craft beers.
According to the plan, the newest location at 21077 Powerline Road in Boca Raton, FL (see photo), will open before the end of the year.
Stay tuned for more exciting news regarding HOD and plans for several more locations. We wish owner Baruch Sandhaus much success and Ha'tzlacha.

T-Fusion's Chef Daniel Rivera Comes Second in the Chef Wanted TV Competition

On October 17, Food Network aired the Chef Wanted episode featuring Chef

Daniel Rivera from T-Fusion Steakhouse. Four chefs were called to show off their cooking skills in a competition, where the winner was to be offered a job at Christy's on Broadway, a popular non-kosher restaurant in Long Beach, LA.

Daniel Rivera reached the final round with flying colors, where he was competing head-to-head with a local Californian chef.

Apparently, LA couldn't handle the New York toughness, and our chef got a distinguished second place. Lucky for all NYC kosher diners, T-Fusion Steakhouse gets to keep its accomplished chef for the patrons to enjoy his excellent cooking.

Rafaello Kosher Pizza Opening in Midtown Manhattan

After we reported a few weeks ago that "Pizza al Volo" was due to open sometime soon, here comes another pizza cafe on its heels. "Raffaello" will be located near 46th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenue and will open at the end of October. The owner Charly Darwich tells us that it will be more upscale then your typical kosher pizza store, and will specialize in real Italian pizza, not American style, but the prices will fall in line within the other pizza places. The restaurant will also serve pasta, sandwiches, and salads, all under the OK kosher supervision (Cholov Yisroel).

Lox Cafe at The Jewish Museum

This is one of these cafes that are literally and figuratively hidden and out of sight from many diners. It's in the lower level of The Jewish Museum and it's largely an unknown. But it happens to be a great spot for an inexpensive, quick, counter-service kind of lunch, especially if you find yourself on the East Side of Central Park. The Hester is moving out of the Dining Room

The Hester's Itta Werdiger Roth To Open Permanent Restaurant Location In Prospect Heights

If you're one of the many, many people trying to get into The Hester's underground supper club events before they're sold out, you're in luck, Itta Werdiger Roth (alias Kate Hester) and a partner are gearing up to open Prospect Heights' first kosher small plates bar.

"The Hester will basically cease to exist as it was," Itta says, "but we'll definitely do pop-up events in the restaurant every so often and keep it alive." Itta says she thought of any number of awful names for the place, mostly centered around pickles and brine. "I will definitely be pickling stuff," she says. "The REAL way, fermenting style."

Itta says they're hoping to open at the end of October or early November, so you can finally have your chance to sample her amazing-looking food-albeit outside of The Hester's home of Ditmas Park. (H/T Ditmas Park Corner)

Noodles

The final piece of the puzzle of the Ruthie's/Sabra takeover has taken shape. Noodles Asian Restaurant opened last month on Central Avenue where Ruthie's once stood for many years. They are next door to Pizza'le, which we told you a couple of months ago, took over Sabra Pizza (both are owned by Sammy, who also owns Burgers across the street). But what makes "Noodles" different from most Asian cuisine kosher restaurants, according to Dani Klein ofYeahThatsKosher, "is the in-house hand-made pasta or noodles that go into every dish. When ordering from Noodles, you can choose from a variety of noodles: plain, spinach, carrot, knife-cut plain, and knife-cut whole wheat. The process is amazing to watch, as the kitchen is open to customers to watch the noodles being twisted and cut. Before choosing the pasta, you choose what type of protein you want in your dish: Chicken, Beef, Lamb, and Duck. Finally, you choose the style of your dish: Pho (soup), Stir Fry, Crunchy (deep fried noodles), and Sandwich (baguette or laffa)." You can watch a video on how they make the pasta here. GREAT NECK:

Fanous Bar & Grill

This is the new name of the Persian & Middle Eastern restaurant at 451 Middle Neck Road, which replaces Safa, which replaced Betty's and we hope that it fares better then the two other namesakes. They tell us it's under new management, new design, better food, and better service. For one thing, their website is more professional and has lots of really nice food and catering pictures. The restaurant has live music on Saturday nights, outdoor seating on their front patio and a huge parking lot. They are under the Vaad Harabonim of Queens.

LAKEWOOD, NJ:

This upscale restaurant opened a couple of months ago at 978 River Avenue but just caught our eye as they offer a Nouvelle cuisine menu with inspired flavors in a refined ambiance. Opened for dinner only from 5:30-10pm.

South Side Sandwich Shop

Here is another place that we just discovered. This small "pop up" outdoorsy restaurant, reminiscent of Ari White's Wandering Que, is also located at 1000 River Avenue (a block from Estreia above) and serves all the Southern comfort food you'd expect. With their most recent purchase of a new large smoker (see image above), doubled the size they used to have, we're pretty sure we will be there sooner rather than later.

The former dairy restaurant, which was founded by Natalie Sultan, has now been taken over by chef Todd Aarons, who had previously helmed the kitchen at Tierra Sur, a kosher eatery in Oxnard's Herzog Wine Cellars. The modern decor restaurant at 8657 West Pico Blvd. is now open after the completion of construction. They offer a local rustic Mediterranean menu.

Natalie Sultan who had opened 26 restaurant (see above) in 2006 with her husband and two daughters, has now moved on to open Trattoria Natalie, which is a half block down Pico in the former King Fu location, serving kosher dairy Italian cuisine. A Hotbed of Kosher Restaurants

While I have traveled to many kosher restaurants in cities throughout the world, I believe Los Angeles is the one city where you will find the most consecutive restaurants on one long avenue. There are over 40 kosher restaurants in less than a mile on West Pico Blvd, in what should be the new Restaurant Row. With absolutely no exaggeration necessary, I can tell you that I went up and down Pico over 50 times during my 5 days there. And the variety of restaurants on this strip is fantastic. From American to Thai to Chinese to Persian to Italian to French to Israeli to Asian (not to mention all the burger, schnitzel and sushi joints) it is quite marvelous.

And of course, not every restaurant can be on Pico. There another dozen or so restaurants scattered around the LA area and dozens more in the valley. Although, one thing that did surprise me was that there haven't really been any new restaurants openings for a quite a while. The restaurant life is a cycle, and while there have been just a few closings, not many people are opening here either. But here is some breaking news: The dairy restaurant Twenty Six, will be turning meat in a month or so and the owners have plans to open a dairy restaurant just a block over in the near future.

But it seems the Doheny Kosher Market scandal has hit some of the restaurants hard, with some even switching supervisions and others contemplating it. I was surprised that the store's name is still in large letters. I would have thought the community would not have wanted to be reminded every time they drove by. In a weird kind of way, I almost think it's becoming a photo opp for a tourist to show his/her friends back home, that this is the market that...at least I think that, since I took a picture of it myself.

Anyway, I had a great time visiting and dining at all the restaurants, schmoozing with the owners and hearing how they are doing. Like all kosher restaurants around the country, it's not easy, there are daily struggles and issues, but they are trying hard.
