About Kosher Chinglish
If you build it, they will come. Well, Ken Heck built Kosher Chinglish, opened it during the fall of 2020, and the Jews of Las Vegas came in droves. For the first time, truly authentic kosher Chinese food was available!
Heck was inspired in 2017 when he was sitting shiva for his mother. His Cantonese in-laws, Anna Lam, and renowned Chef Po Fai Lam were concerned about him having enough food, so they flew in to cook for him. He worked with them to make their traditional dishes kosher, and the result was over ninety people showing up on the final nights of shiva because the food was such a draw.
Heck and the Lams knew they hit on something, and Kosher Chinglish was born.
This isn’t your typical American Chinese restaurant. There’s no sesame chicken or beef and broccoli on the menu. The food isn’t syrupy. It isn’t western fair disguised as Chinese food. This is authentic, traditional Cantonese cuisine.
One of their most popular dishes is Poh Poh's Chicken Dumplings. They are listed as “Grandma’s recipe,” on the menu, and Grandma clearly knows what she’s doing. The dumplings are hand-folded daily, with chicken, chives, and mushrooms on the inside. They’re hand-folded daily. Another popular dish is the Sliced Beef Rib with Green Beans, Stir-fried. This contains crispy green beans, tender and juicy beef, enoki, and button mushrooms. If you’re looking for something a little spicier, you might want to try the Beef Short Rib in Yellow Curry, Stewed, which has slow-cooked boneless beef rib stewed in an aromatic house-made yellow curry.
While there are a variety of beef and chicken dishes for the carnivores, Kosher Chinglish also boasts a variety of vegetarian and vegan options.
Between the crispy vegetarian egg rolls the option of stir-fried or deep-fried green beans, and the Braised Tofu with Shitake Mushrooms, stir-fried and served with Bok Choy in a savory brown gravy, vegetarian diners will not go hungry.
There is also a fair selection of alcoholic beverages available; they have everything from wine and beer to sake. There are only two dessert options, but both are worth trying. You can either get the Mango Coconut Tapioca, which includes mango, passion fruit, coconut, and tapioca pearls, or the Chocolate Cake, which has a strawberry crumble, hazelnut chocolate, gold pearls, and fresh strawberries.
As a casual takeout place, Chinglish brings Cantonese tradition, culture, and most importantly, food to the kosher Jews’ family table. Keeping kosher shouldn’t mean you miss out on ethnic cuisine, and thanks to Heck, you don’t have to.
