ABOUT Essen NY Deli

He's bringing the deli back! When Yitzy Jacobowitz opened this gem early in 2011, they had a mission. “There was no old style deli left in Brooklyn,” Yitzy says. “I wanted to bring back the old fashioned delicatessen from the Lower East Side, where you can get good deli homemade from scratch.” And they did, using all the added amenities of the 21st century to make the classics and more.

With photos of a bygone era decorating the walls, a visit to Essen NY Deli truly takes you back in time. The dark wooden chairs are comfortably padded and tables are topped with glass ketchup bottles alongside salt and pepper shakers.

A modern glass counter displays what would be a dream spread at any simcha, with everything from pickles to coleslaw, beets, pasta, corn, chickpeas, beans, potato salad and lots more. Then there’s the meat. Corned beef, tongue and roast beef are just few of the appetizing selections. All are made in-house. Other offerings like stuffed cabbage and chopped liver give you more of that Eastern European palate, while spaghetti and meatballs as well as a variety of burgers (including pure, lean beefburgers) tickle the American taste buds. You can also come in for some piping hot soup, sizzling steak, tender veal or a flavorful knockwurst. Round it all out with some solid side dishes and you’ll be set for the week. Be sure to try their most popular dishes, which include pastrami, honey beef and, of course, tasty kishke.

[continued above, right]

Best time to come if you’re looking for action? Thursday night. The cholent buffet begins at 10pm and all 150 seats are filled on a weekly basis. They serve three different kinds of hot kugel and of course the best cholent in Brooklyn – by far. Drinks are included and you can get it all for only $12.95. “People leave here hot and happy,” they say. You can see why.

The food is absolutely the best... superb! However, the service is slow. Last time we were there, it took an hour to get served. Needs improvement.

The food here is absolutley delicious! A must for all to try! The noodle pudding is just like the way my mother made it. I couldnt believe it. They also have a very unique way of making some dishes, like the potato salad. Essen has my AAA+ rating.
