Businessman Yuda Holtzberg teamed up with restaurateur Nadav Chadad to open Main House BBQ in Mill Basin as an eclectic barbeque fusion meat restaurant.

By COLlive reporter

About a year ago, Crown Heights tech businessman Yuda Holtzberg began making smoked brisket in his backyard. Whoever got to taste it, sang its praises.

Holtzberg soon began smoking all kinds of meat, until one day he realized he had a real passion for creating delicious food, which he loved sharing with family and friends. At the suggestion of a friend, he began to dream about opening a restaurant. But where to begin?

On his birthday, after praying at the Rebbe’s Ohel, he suddenly remembered that he had heard about a Kosher barbeque restaurant in Brooklyn which had recently closed down. After some research, he tracked down the original owner and bought the Main House BBQ in Mill Basin, an area with a large Israeli population.

Holtzberg teamed up with Nadav Chadad, an experienced restaurateur who owns the newly revamped Ess n’ Bench with locations in Crown Heights and Borough Park, to create an eclectic barbeque fusion meat restaurant.

The two have combined their culinary and creative vision to open Main House Kosher Bar and Restaurant, offering meat dishes combining barbecue, American, Israeli and Mediterranean cuisines for “a menu you’ve never tasted anywhere else,” Holtzberg tells COLlive.com.

The menu includes smoked meats, such as brisket, turkey, and spare ribs, as well as burgers and steaks.

They serve a hefty pounder steak, with a side of crunchy garlic pickles and creamy baked potatoes topped with baked beans with a little kick. The dinosaur spare ribs are dripping with house-made delectable barbecue sauce, and they serve burgers in a few variations, from flavorful all the way to jalapeno. The sliced turkey breast is moist and full of flavor.

Another specialty is their appetizers, which Holtzberg and Chadad have created themselves. Shishito peppers are lightly fried, with the element of suspense – you never know which one will be spicy. They also offer a unique potato crisp with a “surprise in every bite,” chicken nuggets, and crispy onion rings.

“The difference between my restaurant and the other smokehouses is we offer many other types of dishes,” Holtzberg says. “Not always does everyone in a party want to eat the same thing. We offer a variety of incredible dishes to suit every taste.”

The meat is mostly Lubavitch Shechita, Holtzberg says. All the meat is smoked on premises in a specially designed room which keeps the smoke ventilated from the restaurant, and all their dishes are homemade.

“At other restaurants, you have to ask if anything on the menu is Lubavitch. Here, whatever items we can get Lubavitch Shechita, we do. Although people should always ask their server before ordering to be sure,” he says.

The restaurant also offers an alcoholic bar, with 7 different wines, and exotic beers. “If you can find a beer in the local store, you will not find it here,” he says.

The rustic, brick-walled restaurant has a warm, inviting ambiance, and seats around 35. In the future they plan to open a back yard outdoor area as well. There is ample parking available in their own parking lot.

“My goal here is to offer people a nice place to come with their spouse or with friends and to offer dishes that are exciting and surprising, rather than the same things you can get anywhere else,” he says. “I can’t wait to greet all of you as our guests. I guarantee you will be surprised and delighted.”
