ABOUT ALENbi

When one thinks of Israeli food, they think of falafel stuffed in a pita, eaten on the go. Now, thanks to Yuda Schlass, the Hipster of Hasid+Hipster fame, and acclaimed chef Elior Balbul, New York has a new casual yet classy upscale restaurant focused on modern Israeli fare – Alenbi.

Chef Elior is a veteran Israeli chef who began his career in the kitchen of Frida Kalo in Tel Aviv. From there he worked his way to the acclaimed Mizlala and Catit Restaurants under the tutelage of Chef Meir Adoni. When Chef Meir Adoni opened Blue Sky, his first Kosher restaurant in Tel Aviv, Chef Elior was tapped to be the Executive Chef. Now he brings his talents to Alenbi, taking Israeli cuisine and flipping it on its head, giving it a modern gourmet twist with nary a falafel stuffed pita in sight. The menu at Alenbi replaces shwarma and kebabs with dishes like Deconstructed Falafel, consisting of white tahini, sumac onion, crispy chickpea, fava bean, and amba coulis, and garnished with parsley, mint, and cilantro.

Alenbi, opened in October 2017, serves the food of modern day Israel, offering up a menu influenced by the rich cultures of Jewish kitchens across the Middle-East and Europe. Notable dishes include the Drunk Liver appetizer of chicken liver mousse, served with pistachio, silan, crispy onion, mandarin crème, pickles, and baigale’h toast. Upping the gourmet ante is the Italki, a dish of grilled filet mignon, chestnut cream, grilled broccolini, winter veggie stuffed tortellini, with a macadamia crumble and chicken stock reduction. Chef Elior even goes as far as to elevate traditional Israeli-inspired desserts, offering up such choices as the Limon Cookie’lida, a confection of cardamom and lemon zest ice cream, served with pistachio cookies, salted caramel popcorn, and popcorn foam.

But a dinner at Alenbi isn’t just about the food. It’s about the experience too. Owner Yuda has deliberately cultivated a trendy, modern, yet homey feel within Alenbi. The intimate dining room features custom designed and Israeli made furniture, arranged to highlight the six seat chef table that overlooks the open kitchen. Each dish served at Alenbi is artistically and purposefully plated, and diners can watch the construction of their meal in real time, using their view of the open kitchen to catch a glimpse of the hustle and bustle of chefs at work. Saturday nights in the restaurant are fondly described as a “balagan” with fun and energetic music adding to the vibrant atmosphere
