Ever since it opened, Izzy’s BBQ has been a cult favorite of both kosher and non-kosher consumers alike with people traveling from all over for a taste of owner Sruli Edelman’s famous ribs, brisket, and wings. Now, fans of Izzy’s will get to try the Brisket King’s smoked meat in another form – tacos. Teaming up with former Basil chef Jose Soto, Izzy opened the eponymous Taqueria right next door to his famous BBQ joint to great acclaim in February 2019. Since then, the excitement has only grown, with diners eager to try Chef Soto’s authentic Mexican cuisine.
Edelman has been known to strive for authenticity in all that he does, which becomes increasingly apparent with each bite of the genuine Mexican fare. Fans of Izzy’s meat love Soto’s tacos, especially the BBQ Brisket Taco appetizer, which is made from Izzy’s famous smoked brisket and served with guacamole and green tomatillo sauce. All the tortillas are made fresh in-house daily, and Soto’s craftmanship shows. Other fan-favorites include the handmade Chorizo Spiced Brisket Empanadas with a side of horseradish cream sauce, and the Fish Taco, served with lime cabbage, mayo, and roasted jalapeno. Pickier eaters will be happy to know that all cilantro garnishes are optional.

The Taqueria serves up some more substantial fare as well, with items like the Steak de la Semana, served with roasted ripe plantain, guacamole, and rice and beans crowning the menu. The Rice Bowl, containing rice, beans, radishes, guacamole, pico de gallo, and a choice of lamb, brisket, carnitas, or adobe chicken has also become an instant hit. Of course, no trip to the Taqueria would be complete without a slice of the Taqueria’s zingy Tequila Lime Pie and a selfie in front of the ever Instagram-able mural, bursting with color and Mexican flair.
Izzy’s Taqueria has swiftly become a worthy addition to Sruli Edelman’s fast-growing smoked meat empire, and diners everywhere look forward to seeing what else Izzy’s has in store.
