The vibrant cuisine at Got Kosher? Restaurant reflects the heritage of chef-owner Alain Cohen, in both his authentic, centuries-old Tunisian dishes, and in his refined French techniques, with many of the dishes rarely found outside of Paris. Upon arriving in Hollywood and after a series of learning culinary jobs, Alain began a successful wholesale gourmet sandwiches and salad operation, and created a catering kitchen in 2005. His small provision shop Got Kosher? opened in 2009 and was remodeled and expanded into a full-service café in 2012, following the owner’s desire to open a place to reflect his passion for delicious food that “just happens to be kosher.”
Got Kosher? has established itself as a popular spot for a casual lunch or dinner, available for dine-in or take-out. Fridays are especially jam packed with customers from all over town coming for Shabbat provisions, with lines for their award-winning challahs reaching to the corner of the block. The café offers table and bar seating inside as well as outside sidewalk seating, perfect for the L.A. weather almost year-round.
Alain Cohen spices up his international kosher cuisine with North African ingredients, including the historic and beloved house-made harissa, the signature spice of Tunisia, as well as updated French dinner classics. Got Kosher? is the only place in L.A. to offer authentic merguez, and specialties include authentic classic and contemporary French-Tunisian dishes, such as the addictive and classic Tunisian sandwich offered in three versions- fricassee mini, stirato sandwich and deconstructed Assiette Tunisienne. The cafe also has original and outrageous versions of popular deli sandwiches. All of the generously portioned sandwiches are served with a pile-high house salad. For example, for their “Classic House-Cured Pastrami Sandwich” they use select meat from lean, grass-fed, free range cattle raised in Uruguay, which is brined and then cured in-house to control the salt content. Sauerkraut made in-house adds to the positively “Rubenesque” qualities of the Kosher Ruben, made with house-cured pastrami, as well as oven roasted turkey breast (no nitrates); non-dairy (Tofutti) mozzarella cheese and Russian dressing, also all made in-house. The bakery out back rolls out an ever-evolving variety of thin-crust pretzel challahs and rolls, which made it to the Los Angeles Magazine top 100 food items for 2012.
