About Hikari

Surfside’s dining landscape continues to evolve, and the latest name making waves is Hikari, a modern Japanese restaurant that defies expectations. Located at 9472 Harding Avenue, the newly built-out space replaces the former Backyard BBQ, trading rustic Americana for the kind of ambiance more often associated with Tokyo rooftops or upscale LA sushi bars.

What Hikari provides is a fully immersive culinary experience, where the precision of traditional Japanese technique meets a confident, contemporary approach to plating and flavor. The menu is divided between an omakase tasting experience and an à la carte selection. Sashimi and nigiri are served with striking visual restraint; no unnecessary garnishes, just clean cuts of fish, subtly accented with house-blended soy or micro herbs. A hand roll bar adds a touch of interactivity, while dishes like Wagyu beef skewers and tempura mushrooms lean into the cooked side of the spectrum.

One of Hikari’s standout features is its cocktail program. Unlike some establishments where the beverage list is an afterthought, Hikari puts equal energy into its bar. Expect drinks that aren’t just there to fill a menu slot but are built to complement the food—light, aromatic highballs with yuzu and shiso, or smoked whiskey drinks that mirror the char of the grilled lamb chops.

Early diners have praised Hikari not only for the quality of its fish and striking presentation but also for its attentive service and cohesive atmosphere. Guests have noted that the omakase is thoughtfully paced, with each course introduced with clarity and care. Many have highlighted the balance between traditional Japanese technique and kosher culinary innovation, describing the experience as refreshingly upscale without feeling pretentious.
