About Modern Bread and Bagel (Upper West Side)
Modern Bread and Bagel is a chic new Israeli restaurant that is dedicated to artisan and natural food, with a focus on fish, cheese, vegetables, and fresh baked bread that everyone can enjoy; since everything on the menu is 100% gluten free! Open for breakfast and lunch, this dairy restaurant is one of the hottest new additions to New York’s Upper West Side. When you first walk in your eye is instantly drawn above, where woven basket lampshades from Thailand cast a soft glow on the tabletops.
Owners, husband and wife team, Orly Gottesman and Josh Borenstein have a unique story. Orly was driven to develop a gluten free baking product that didn’t compromise on taste to benefit her food-centric husband living with celiac disease. Gottesman and Bernstein partnered with Chef Nir Zook on a recent trip to Israel. Chef Zook discovered his love of cooking at the age of 13 in his family home, a flower and fruit farm, located in a small village in southern Israel. Chef Zook has years of restaurant experience. He recently opened the kosher restaurant Mapu in Tel Aviv and previously had several restaurants in Jaffa, including Cordelia and Noa Bistro. He’s also catered private events large and small, in Israel and the US.
The menu offers sweet treats as well as savory delights. A particular favorite are the bagels, which most diners don’t even realize are gluten-free, especially when combined with delightful cream cheese and some pastrami spiced lox. There’s also the Mushroom & Tempeh Schawarma which offers a vegan alternative to the well-loved Israeli dish. Featuring oyster mushrooms and of-course tempeh, this is a must try for both vegans and carnivores alike. For those in the mood for sweet, the Lemon Ricotta Hotcakes are a must-try. Served with a berry compote these will instantly become a favorite of pancake fans everywhere.
After 4PM Modern Bread and Bagel turns into Arba and the menu becomes more dinner friendly with dishes like Smoked Branzino with Caramelized Onion and Crisp Rice. They also offer a pre-paid Shabbat menu, where diners can come in and enjoy a set-menu family style meal.
This self-described passionate Mediterranean kitchen seriously has something for everyone.
