About Pizza World

Perfect Pizza AND Masterful Mexican? At LA’s Pizza World, the Answer is YES!

In the ever-changing kosher restaurant landscape of LaLaLand, very few such establishments can accurately be regarded as “institutions.” Pizza World—a unique Mexican-food-and-pizza paradise that has been serving LA’s Fairfax community for more than three decades—is a notable exception. But this den of dairy delights has not let its longevity lead to complacency. Instead, as owner, lifelong pizza fanatic, and all-around mensch Darren Melamed says: “When we deliver pizza… people look at us like super heroes, and we take that responsibility seriously.”

In service of delivering an exciting dining experience to each new generation of restaurant patrons, Melamed isn’t afraid to innovate and adapt, either—in addition to his first love, pizza, he offers an extensive menu of Los Angeles’ most ubiquitous (and America’s favorite) variety of ethnic cuisine: Mexican food. The combination is perhaps unexpected, and had some detractors early on, but it actually works so harmoniously, it’s a wonder more pizza shops aren’t pairing their cheese pies with chimichangas these days.

Speaking of chimis, the Mini Chimichangas, filled with beans and cheese and served with house-made guacamole and salsa, are a crowd-pleasing appetizer, as are the perfectly crispy, soy-meat-filled Taquitos. For maximum Mexican enjoyment, get both of those deep-fried delights, plus quesadillas and deluxe nachos, all served together in an appetizer combo aptly called the Fiesta Platter. Or, for a more traditional pizza shop starter, you can’t beat the golden breaded Mozzarella Sticks.

Salads range from Greek or Caesar to Taco or Avocado, while sandwiches include an Impossible Burger on a pretzel bun and a crave-worthy Tuna Melt on toasty house-baked bread. Sides include spiral-cut Seasoned Fries, homemade Garlic Bread, and a broccoli-and-cheese Loaded Baked Potato.

Over on the Italian side of the menu, you’ll find several pastas to choose from, including bubbling-hot Baked Ziti, fantastically creamy Fettuccini Alfredo, and lovingly layered Lasagna. Meanwhile, the Mexican side offers ranchera-sauced Enchiladas, fried tilapia Fish Tacos, and the ever-popular, egg-battered Chile Relleno—all served with traditional beans and rice, and all excellent.

The Mexican food here is so good, they could easily get away with renaming it “Burrito World”, but that would be an insult to the actual pizza at Pizza World, which is every bit as delicious as the south-of-the-border fare. The pizza options are endless, with classic pies available in three sizes, plus lactose-free, gluten-free, and even whole wheat styles on offer as well. Toppings range from traditional mushrooms and olives to eggplant and soy pepperoni, but, for the most quintessentially Pizza World pizza experience possible, you have to order—you guessed it—the Mexican Pizza, topped with beans, tomatoes, onions, and jalapeños.

From a childhood dream of creating a pizza utopia, to becoming the unique Mexi-talian masterpiece of today, Pizza World is indeed a Los Angeles institution that is not to be missed.
